The Hispanic Institute is an intellectual community that contributes to the rediscovery of a legacy of thought inherited by Spain, Portugal and Ibero-America. It was born from our conviction that examining and understanding our shared past and intellectual lineage, with a view to the future, will foster closer ties among our countries and add significant value to political discourse, social and cultural dialogue, and the development of public policy.
Those of us from Spain, Portugal and Ibero-America who share a humanist vision have long been united in our opposition to ideas that undermine the freedom and progress of peoples. In particular, we have confronted communism, the principal scourge of our civilisation. However, our defence of freedom, life and human dignity, and our pursuit of the flourishing of our civilisation, must rest on firmer foundations. These should not merely consist of opposition to a common enemy but be rooted in all that we share.
History, tradition and faith are among these pillars, as is a lineage of political thought that, while neither linear nor uninterrupted, we wish to explore and update so that this tradition may also serve our societies and political class. This intellectual legacy, inherited by the peoples of Portugal, Spain and the nations of Ibero-America, is invaluable yet largely unknown, overshadowed by the dominance of the Anglo-Saxon tradition and by a Black Legend that has caused much harm and division.
To make our vision a reality, we need organisations and individuals who stand out for their commitment to this vision and their work in this field. For this reason, we invite you to join the Hispanic Institute
