International Seminar: Historical and Theological Perspectives of Hispanic Thought

On December 7, 2023, the Escuela Hispánica held a new academic session devoted to the study of philosophical, theological, and legal thought in the Hispanic world, in collaboration with the University of Piura, the Pontifical University of Salamanca (Institute of Ibero-American Thought), and the Institut Michel Villey.

The online event connected scholars from Spain and Peru to discuss key aspects of Iberian thought from the early modern period to the present.

The session was opened by Dr. M.ª Yolanda Espiña Campos (University of Piura) and Dr. M.ª Idoya Zorroza (Pontifical University of Salamanca), who outlined the goals of the meeting and its link with research on scholastic tradition and natural law.

Dr. Jean Paul Coujou (Institut Michel Villey) began with a presentation on “Anthropo-theological aspects of natural law and natural right in Francisco de Vitoria”, followed by Dr. Carlos Sánchez Raygada (University of Piura), who explored “Indian Canon Law and the Pastoral of the Eucharist (16th–18th centuries)”.

After a short break, Dr. Manuel Lázaro Pulido (UPSA / UNIR) presented “The anthropological contribution of Franciscan thought: the philosophy of Bonaventure”, and Dr. Jorge Oliva Navarro (University of Piura) closed the session with “Dr. Sutil’s Chair in the Viceroyalty of Peru: The Transmission of Scotist Thought in the Convent of the Twelve Apostles of Lima”.

The seminar concluded with a final discussion and official closing remarks.

This event was held with the support of the research project “La comprensión vitoriana de la persona: estudio y edición del ms. 85/3, en relación con su obra y textos fundamentales de su escuela” (PID2021-126478NB-C21), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.

The event is finished.
