León Gómez Rivas

León Gómez Rivas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the Universidad Europea de Madrid, where he has taught courses on the History of Economic Thought since 1991. He holds a PhD in Modern History from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, with a thesis on “The Viceroy of Peru, Don Francisco de Toledo” (1990), and a PhD in Economics and Business from the same university, with a thesis entitled “The School of Salamanca, Hugo Grotius, and Economic Liberalism in Great Britain” (2004).
His research focuses on the political and economic thought of the Second Scholastic movement in Spain, particularly the School of Salamanca. He has served as director or co-director of numerous doctoral theses, including works on political economy in the Enlightenment scientific expeditions to Spanish America, education from the perspective of the Austrian School of Economics, and the role of the State in higher education systems.
He is a member of the Mont Pèlerin Society, the Diego de Covarrubias Centre, and various academic associations. He has collaborated with the Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala on the Scholastic Site and has been invited by Liberty Fund Colloquia to give lectures. He recently completed a Bachelor’s in Theology at the Universidad Eclesiástica San Dámaso. He has also published works such as Don Diego de Covarrubias (Unión Editorial, 2022), a collective volume analysing this figure of the Spanish Golden Age.
He is a regular commentator on issues of economics, security, and strategic threats in Latin America, as well as on the relationship between economics and ethics. He is one of the world’s leading specialists in the economic thought of Thomist and late Scholastic authors. He served as President of the Philadelphia Society (2017–2018) and has been a member of the Mont Pèlerin Society since 1980.
